Having a meeting tonight, 7 PM, my place, to see about having others help with patrols and getting a real security force organized. I assume you'll want to be there. Bring any reports you think are relevant.
[Zoe has some pride, but she's also not an idiot. She gives it a day to rest after her ordeal with Theo, then starts to write.]
Zephyr,
Dustin told me I need to apologize for hurting people before you'll let me be. Reckon you work something like Lin, punishing folk who don't do as you want them to. You want law and order, and sure enough, that's a good reason to keep unruly folk in line. When you ain't here to stop someone, though, I won't sit idle while there's a threat in the Meadous.
Theo was a threat, make no mistake. He meant to harm more than me if he could with the sickness he's got curling around his head. I stopped him; he won't be hurting anybody for a spell. I'm not sorry for that.
I will say I'm sorry I didn't go for knocking him out and tying him up instead of shooting him. Reckon he could have bled out from that. When you got someone attacking you, though, the 'kinder way' don't always come into your head. And if someone ever is attacking you, you attack them back. Don't you dare sit there and take it because it's kinder. It ain't kinder to you, and it ain't kinder to them when they think they can do that without immediate consequence.
I'll start using my gun as a last resort, but I'm a rifle. You brought a gun to this place and asking me not to shoot is hard. Goes against what I am. Think on that next time you pick someone to pull from the darkness, Little One.
[Zoe will find the following threatening letter in the mailbox should it be checked.]
I’ve been watching you all closely. Waiting for the opportune moment to arrive. And now it has, my gems and jewels. Now is the time I’ve taken her. That Mailsloth you’ll never miss. A mere trinket amongst a sea of true gold and silver.
Never let it be said that we dragons do not have restraint, hmm? All the treasures of this world to pick over and I’ve only taken something you shan’t miss. Most of you, anyway. Even if you want her back, though… you’ll never find her.
Not in her tree where the best leaves do grow. Not at the pond where she’ll swim to and fro. Not in your houses, for what is there there? Not at the board where you pull out your hair. Check in the tower; we dragons love those. You might find a clue, but who really knows?
